The
growth of tourism in trekking areas can have a
negative impact on the fragile ecological balance of
these places. Help to minimise the
potentially negative impacts by
:

Treading softly, choosing your footwear for the terrain. Often you will only need to wear lightweight walking boots or even running shoes.

Keeping to designated trails when out walking or riding, both for your safety and the protection of the environment.

Stay on the track, even if it's rough or muddy. Walking on the track edges and cutting corners on steep, zigzagging tracks increases erosion and visual scarring.

When trekking in Hill-tribe areas, hire a local guide. In this way, your contributions will go directly to the local community. Your stay will be enriched by efforts to engage in friendly exchanges with local people who love to hear foreigners attempt to speak a few words of their language.

If there are no tracks, spread out rather than follow each other's footsteps. A plant will be more likely to recover if walked on once than if stomped on by the whole party.

Walk as quietly as possible. This reduces the likelihood of disturbing wildlife and increases the chances of seeing it.

Do not touch or feed wild animals.

If there are no toilet facilities available, bury waste and avoid sites near waterways.

Carry all rubbish with you. Even discarded organic litter such as apple cores or orange skin adds nutrients to the soil which can aid the spread of weeds.

Do not buy products that exploit wildlife or will damage habitats, refrain from ordering wild meat dishes. Avoid buying animal by-products such as coral, or dried traditional medicines made from animal parts such as seahorses.

Do not give money to children as this will only encourage begging. It is better to pay for a friendship band, postcard or locally made crafts. It is usually a good idea to give gifts as a group through the guide to a school or charity.

When things go wrong, keep your cool as losing one's temper will not solve the problem. Talking loudly or behaving aggressively is perceived as extremely rude and embarrassing and it means a lose of face for everyone. A smile and compromise will usually resolve any conflicts and problems.
