Canada offers assistance in teachers’ training 16th July 2008
The
Minister in charge of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
has offered Vietnam assistance in teachers’ training and high-quality
vocational training.
The minister, Beverly Oda, told Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan
in Hanoi on July 14 that in addition to projects that would help train a
high-quality labour force in Vietnam, Canada is interested in the
employment of trained workers and equal opportunities for women in
employment.
She praised Vietnam’s achievements in socio-economic development and its
improved living conditions, especially in achieving between 95 and 97
percent school attendance rate for children.
Canada is willing to share its experiences in development, Oda said,
adding that the two countries should work out a legal foundation to
better tap their potential of cooperation and boost commercial and
investment relations.
She also encouraged Vietnam to continue boosting agricultural production
in the context of world food crisis.
Deputy PM Nhan thanked Canada for its practical projects in tertiary and
community education and welcomed further assistance in all fields,
especially in education.
Vietnam plans to increase the rate of trained workers among general
education graduates from the current 30 percent to 50 percent by 2010,
he said.
“To reach that goal, the country is deploying a programme to provide
20,000 teachers with vocational training in the next eight years and it
is upgrading the system of vocational training schools in both
infrastructure and curriculum,” he said. “Canadian assistance in this
field is, therefore, highly appreciated.” CIDA Minister Oda is on a
visit to Vietnam from July 11-15.
