Labour market sees huge demand for high-level staff 26th July 2008

There is a huge demand for medium and high level staff in the Vietnamese labour market, according to the country’s largest employment and recruitment website.

Statistics released on the website showed that the need for experienced staff for non-managerial positions accounted for nearly 67 percent of the total recruitment demand in the second quarter of this year. During the period, the demand for staff as heads of groups and supervisors made up 9.3 percent of the total, up 0.6 percent from the previous quarter.

The increasing need coupled with a serious shortage of medium and high-level personnel have made hard for a business in their headhunting. It took six months for an US pharmaceutical company to find out an appropriate person for its sales executive vacancy.

The most severe shortage of high-level personnel has been seen in the financial, commercial, health, electronics and telecommunication sectors, according to a recent survey conducted by the France-Vietnam Management Education Centre (CFVG).

The survey also indicated that the current demand for highly skilled and managerial staff doubled that in 2003 and it is forecast to triple by 2012. Navigos Group’s Personnel Director Nguyen Thi Van Anh said the fact the country’s education and training programmes have failed to catch up with its economic development amid an increase in foreign investment has created a gap in labour demand and supply.

She also said many staff recruited for managerial positions lack necessary skills in management, making business results fall short of expectation.

Businesses should accelerate their cooperation with universities to increase the quality of education, Anh said, further recommending the Government encourage businesses to engage in personnel training along with pouring investment into improving education.

In an effort to raise the quality of training to better meet the requirement for human resources, the Ministry of Education and Training has recently mapped out an advanced training programme which will be implemented in some universities in Vietnam from 2008-2015.

The objective of the scheme is to ensure that graduates are equipped with basic knowledge in many fields, professional skills and capacities to conduct scientific research and adapt to all working environments. The programme projects to train around 4,000 bachelors and 600 postgraduates and doctors.
