Block roads, reduce dust 23rd July 2008                

There may be several ways to keep away dust but residents in Cam Le District in the central city of Da Nang have struck upon a novel, if dangerous, way: They scatter large stones and logs on a section of road so that vehicles are forced to slow down. Locals believe slow vehicles throw up less dust than fast ones. The dust here is caused by the 60 trucks plying the road every day carrying rocks from a nearby quarry and coaches travelling to a military outpost.

"For years we have placed logs on the road on sunny days to slow down vehicles, and removed them at nightfall," Le Thi Gai said, adding that sprinkling water on the road is futile. The locals also resort to placing branches on the road to force drivers to slow down, unmindful of the potentially lethal consequences.

Asked why the locals do not petition authorities about the problem, one resident said, "We live the way we want."
