November 15: stylish helmets to be banned in Vietnam 24th July 2008                

The Ministry of Science and Technology has issued new standards on helmets, under which stylish helmets which are good-looking but don’t protect the head will be banned as of November 15, 2008.

In March 2008, the Association for Standardisation and Protection of Vietnamese Consumers stated that almost all stylish helmets with rims didn’t meet quality standards because producers only paid attention to the fashion aspect, not to the protection of the head.

Stylish helmets often have plastic rims, which were warned by experts to be dangerous to users if traffic accidents occur.

The Association for Standardisation and Protection of Vietnamese Consumers also said that 30% of certified helmets were imitations and up to 80% of helmets failed to meet quality criteria.
