Ho Chi Minh City: Jostling to become … teachers 25th July 2008

   Day Tours in Vietnam

Thousands of people were seen bustling around in front of Tran Dai Nghia High School in district 1, HCM City on the morning of July 23, and caused an unprecedented stampede. They were teachers, and they were trying to submit applications to become teachers in HCM City.

Local residents related that thousands of teachers began queuing up in a long line at 2 am that morning to submit documents to take the exam to become teachers in HCM City schools. In order to be eligible to enter the competition, all the teachers had a sleepless night. Most of the candidates were new graduates, and they were taken to Tran Dai Nghia School by parents or relatives.

When the door of Tran Dai Nghia School opened at 6 am, the stream of people flocked into the school’s hall, hoping to be able to submit documents quickly. A lot of people could not move forward and they got stuck in the crowd, while some fainted, and children burst into loud wails because they were overly frightened.

Why did the candidates have to jostle to get the right to become teachers? The problem lies in the fact that the HCM City Education and Training Department can receive and check documents from 300 candidates at maximum every day. Therefore, the candidates had to jostle to become the lucky people who can submit documents. The department said that July 25 was the deadline to submit documents.

Prior to that, the city’s authorities announced they would hire 4,322 teachers for schools in HCM City under the mode of public competition. 7,000 candidates have registered to take a test via the Internet.

On July 14, the education and training department released a notice that candidates who had codes from 0001 to 0750 would submit documents on July 16, whilecandidates who had codes from 0751 and 1500 would submit documents on July 17, which means that the department would receive 750 applications every day. However, in fact, the department could only process 300 applications a day. As a result, the candidates who could not submit documents on previous days had to try to submit documents by… jostling and elbowing.

Only in 2008 did HCM City authorities begin registrations for entering the competition to become teachers via the Internet, which was applauded by educators and the public. The initiative was believed would create a breakthrough in employing teachers for the city. However, it seems that only a half of the breakthrough has been made.

In the latest news, the HCM City Education and Training Department has decided to extend the deadline for document submission to July 31.
