Report asks why people quit Government jobs 5th July 2008

Low income, limited chances for promotion and underemployment are the main causes behind staff resignations, according to a report from the HCM City People's Committee.

The report showed that 6,422 state employees quit their jobs between July 2003 and the end of 2007.

Results from a recent poll on VietnamWorks.com also showed that 46 per cent of employees were inclined to resign if they were not happy with their current salary. Vietnamese employees cited salary as the major criterion when considering jobs.

Lia Abella, senior project manager of Navigos Group's Viet Nam Salary Survey 2008, said: "At the end of 2007, staff turnover rate was almost 15 per cent and it is predicted to be even more severe in 2008 with high inflation."

As for employers, they are facing difficult issues of how to balance business benefits while effectively attracting and retaining talent. Vietnam's inflation rate in May hit 25.2 per cent, the highest in more than a decade.

A more extensive report, which is expected to give companies a comprehensive picture of compensation and benefits in the Vietnam labour market, will be released by Navigos in the third quarter this year.

The survey, which began on April 14, attracted the participation of 176 companies from major industries such as manufacturing, finance, IT, fast-moving consumer goods, construction and engineering, hospitality and tourism, and pharmaceutical and chemicals. The survey has also received interest from other sectors such as NGOs and education, Abella said.
