Quang Nam whirlwind kills one, leaves hundreds homeless 21st July 2008                

The Vietnamese tradition of preferring male children has pushed the country to the verge of a gender imbalance, a conference in Hanoi heard Friday. In 2007, there were 112 Vietnamese males for every 100 females, the conference heard.

The ratio was similar to China’s in 1987 when it was on the brink of a gender imbalance. In some Vietnamese provinces and cities, the ratio was as high as 128 males for every 100 females.

“Population control is an important issue,” Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung told the national population control conference, organized by the Ministry of Health. Dung pointed out 1.5 percent of Vietnam’s population were assessed as mentally retarded, a ratio that should also be improved, he said.

Dung said Communist Party members should set a good example in family planning. The conference was also told some of Vietnam’s population statistics needed to be addressed. The average life expectancy in Vietnam is 71.43, while the healthy life expectancy was only 58.2, ranked by the World Health Organization (WHO) 116th out of 174 countries

The ratio of mentally retarded children was still increasing with 20 percent of children having mental disorder, the conference heard. Statistics showed the ratio of malnourished children in 2007 dropped to 20 percent of children under five from 25 percent in 2006.
