USA plans to open consulate in Da Nang, Vietnam 11th July 2008

The US Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael Michalak, said the US plans to open a consulate in the central city of Da Nang, an economic hub in Vietnam’s central region.

In an interview with VietNamNet on July 9 in Da Nang, Michalak said the two governments are negotiating the opening of the US consulate in this central city.

According to the US Ambassador, Da Nang is the driving force for economic development in the central region. The US’ investment in this city is up to hundreds of millions of USD while dozens of American non-governmental organisations are conducting social projects in the city.

He said many charity projects funded by the US government are being expanded in the central region. Last year the US granted $400,000 to clean up dioxin at Da Nang Airport. The US government is considering projects to directly assist people who are living in dioxin-infected areas around Da Nang Airport, which could be carried out in the next 3-4 months.
