Police bust robbery gang that drugged victims 6th June 2008

Police in the southern province of Kien Giang have arrested two women belonging to a gang suspected of carrying out a series of robberies by drugging their victims.

Nguyen Thi Tham, 33, of Tra Vinh Province and Tran Thi Nga, 44, of Ba Ria Vung Tau Province were part of a gang that robbed men of jewels after inviting them to hotels or restaurants and drugging them.

During interrogation by the police, the duo admitted to carrying out over 30 thefts throughout the south, including Ho Chi Minh City, and making away with four motorbikes, 12 taels of gold and VND50 million (US$3,100) in cash.

The police also searched the gang’s residence and found 59 tablets, suspected to be knockout drugs. They have been sent for analysis. Police in Can Tho City said Wednesday many victims have reported recently about being drugged and robbed.

The Ninh Thuan Province police said they are investigating a gang that has carried out a series of similar robberies since April.
