TV show unites family members across the globe 9th June 2008

A group of Vietnamese siblings and half-siblings spoke together as a family for the first time last night, thanks to the television show “As If We Never Parted.” Vietnam Television’s show united the group, three siblings born in France and their half-siblings born Vietnam, via online chat.

The group’s father Phan Van Tuc, was 25-years-old when he left his two children in Saigon to study in Paris in late 1950. He would never see them again. In the new country, Tuc got married and had three more children. In 1973, Tuc moved to Canada and gave his eldest French daughter, Lynda Phan, some pictures of him in Saigon when she moved to Martinique at the same time.

In April last year, a Vietnamese man named Dao Dang Trong Giao met Lynda as he traveled the Caribbean island as a tourist. Lynda gave Giao the photos, asking him if he could help find Tuc’s long lost children, her half-siblings. “I’ve so much wanted to meet my half-siblings but have never had a chance to do so,” said Lynda on the show Saturday. Giao submitted the pictures to As If We Never Part and the images were shown on television recently.

The photos caught the attention of a woman named Cuc in Ho Chi Minh City, Tuc’s sister. She said her brother had never contacted the family in Saigon, now HCMC, after he left. Tuc’s two Vietnamese children had also left the country to live in France and Canada. In a taping recorded before the show aired, Lynda Phan and her two siblings in Lyon talked to their half-siblings, one in Paris and one in Canada, for the first time via online chat.

Tuc’s sister Cuc then appeared on the show. Lynda Phan said that before her father passed away five years ago, he had asked her to spread his ashes in a river, hoping that they would one day make their way back to the Mekong and he would finally return home.
